Let’s Send Kids to Harvard – Humans of New York fundraiser for a school in Brooklyn

“I want my scholars to know that there is not a single place they don’t belong.”

We often hear words like these spoken today. But also too often, they have no meaning. They are being said by politicians and the like who use those slogans for nothing more than another vote in their pockets. But there are exceptions. There are women and men like Ms. Lopez, principal of the Mott Hall Bridges Academy in Brownsville, part of New York City notorious for it’s highest crime rate.

This whole movement started with a simple blog entry by Humans of New York’s Brandon Stanton who took a picture of Vidal Chastanet, age 13. This photograph shows Vidal standing in front of anonymous Brooklyn housing projects looking straight into the camera with pursed lips. The following little interview Stanton had with Vidal would inspire thousands of people and lead up to this great fundraising idea:

“Who’s influenced you the most in your life?”
“My principal, Ms. Lopez.”
“How has she influenced you?”
“When we get in trouble, she doesn’t suspend us. She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us. And she tells us that each time somebody fails out of school, a new jail cell gets built. And one time she made every student stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter.”
